My Experience on Make It At Market: A Journey of Creativity, Growth, and Connection

Stepping Out of My Comfort Zone

I’ve always believed that creativity has the power to heal, inspire, and connect us. But it wasn’t until I had the opportunity to be part of the Make It At Market series that I truly realised just how far-reaching that idea can be.

When I applied to appear on the show, I’ll admit—I was a bundle of nerves. The thought of sharing my story and my craft with a wider audience was both thrilling and a little terrifying. But as someone who believes that every step is progress, I saw it as a chance to push myself outside of my comfort zone. Little did I know it would become so much more than a platform to showcase my work—it turned into a truly transformative journey that I’ll always treasure.

From the moment I arrived on set, I was welcomed by a kind, supportive team. The production crew, the hosts, and the other makers immediately helped to calm my nerves and made it easier to focus on sharing the story of how Dandelion & Peacock came to be. As I spoke about my journey—from sewing bunting and cushions to finding healing through craft—I realised that this wasn’t just about the things I make. It was about something deeper: a connection between creativity and mental well-being that I care so deeply about.

Crafting Confidence and Community on Camera

One of the most meaningful parts of Make It At Market was meeting the other makers. Each of us came with different stories and motivations, but there was an immediate sense of camaraderie. That shared experience—filming together, learning from one another, offering encouragement—created a strong bond. It reminded me that while we may each walk our own path, we’re part of a bigger, vibrant creative community.

Of course, being on television was a little surreal! But once I started talking about my work, the nerves eased. Crafting has always been a source of joy for me, and it felt natural to explain how I create my raw edge appliqué cushions. I was so grateful for the opportunity to highlight the therapeutic aspects of craft—something I believe can bring comfort and happiness to so many.

Growing Through the Journey: What I’ve Learned Along the Way

Throughout the process, I learned some valuable lessons that I’ll carry with me. One of the biggest was learning to trust my gut and stay true to my passion. There were definitely moments of self-doubt—times when I questioned whether I was on the right path. But then I reminded myself: I’ve built Dandelion & Peacock by following my creative instincts. And even when the way forward feels uncertain, staying true to what you love will always lead to something meaningful.

I also learned the importance of believing in myself. It sounds simple, but it’s not always easy to recognise that you have skills and knowledge worth sharing. Gaining the confidence to value my own work—and seeing others respond to it—was incredibly affirming.

Another lesson? The power of saying no. In the world of small business, it can feel like you have to say yes to every opportunity. But I’ve learned that if something doesn’t align with my values or vision, it’s okay to politely decline. This is my business, and I get to shape its direction. Building something you love means making choices that reflect who you are.

Not everything in my crafting journey has gone perfectly—there have been unexpected moments, mistakes, and challenges along the way. But instead of viewing those as setbacks, I’ve come to see them as opportunities to learn and grow. Every twist and turn has shaped the direction of my work, and often, it’s the tricky bits that teach you the most and stay with you the longest.

Trusting the Leap: Why Sharing Your Journey Matters

Since the episode aired, I’ve been genuinely overwhelmed by the kind messages and support. So many people have reached out to share how craft has helped them, or to tell me how my story inspired them to start creating again. I’ve connected with new customers, fellow makers, and people who just love handmade things.

In many ways, Make It At Market reminded me of the importance of storytelling. My craft isn’t just about the finished products—it’s about the stories behind them and the connections they create. Sharing my passion in an open, honest way has helped me build bonds that go far beyond the fabric and thread.

Looking back, I’m so glad I took the leap. The experience gave me space to reflect on how far I’ve come, boosted my confidence, and gave me the chance to share the healing power of creativity with a wider audience. I’m deeply grateful for everything the show brought into my life—both personally and professionally.

If you ever get the chance to step outside your comfort zone and share your own creative journey, I wholeheartedly encourage you to go for it. You never know what beautiful things might come from it.

Thank you, Make It At Market, for being such a fantastic platform for makers, and for helping me share my passion with the world.
